Based on the “source-to-sink process and evolution of solid matter in the water system” project of the second scientific expedition of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the research team focused on the core scientific issue of “source-to-sink process”, with multi-disciplinary integrated research methods including sedimentology, mineralogy, petrology, geochronology, geochemistry, remote sensing geology, and computer science,, study the evolution of compositions and structures of sediment in different spatial and temporal scales among the large river systems e.g., Yarlung Tsnagpo, Jinsha River and Lancang River, investigate the “source-to-sink” process in the modern and ancient river systems, and reveal the erosional history of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. At the same time, combining observational data and measured data on hydrology, climate, and geomorphology in the basin, we will explore the quantification and new methods, and evaluate reliability of other minerals on provenance analysis. Our team is in in-depth cooperation with the research group of Professor Gu Qing from the School of Computer and Engineering of Nanjing University and the research group of Professor Hao Huizhen from the Nanjing University of Engineering. Sedimentologist will select and identify standard minerals, build the standard mineral database, learning database, whereas the computer experts develop a set of platform for rapid mineral identification and analysis. The above work and results will provide basic data support and consulting suggestions for the ecological environment protection, early warning of emergency geological disasters in the river basins of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
