Personal Profile

Ji-Chun Wu has long been engaged in teaching and research in groundwater modeling, hydrogeology, and soil and groundwater environmental protection. He serves as the Director of the Institute of Water Resources and Environment at Nanjing University, the Head of the Department of Water Science, and Deputy Director of the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for Water Treatment and Environmental Remediation. In 2007, he was awarded the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and in 2012, he became a Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor. Recognized as an Outstanding Mid-Career Expert in the National Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talents Project in 2017, he has also received special allowances from the State Council. Wu is the Project Leader of a major R&D initiative under China's 13th Five-Year Plan and the lead instructor for the nationally acclaimed undergraduate courses, Groundwater Dynamics and the Pollutant Migration in Groundwater virtual simulation teaching project. Additionally, he has been acknowledged as a leading academic figure in Jiangsu Province’s 333 Project and Qinglan Project.

Professor Wu has led over 40 key national R&D and National Natural Science Foundation projects. He has co-authored 12 academic monographs, 5 textbooks, published over 300 SCI papers, and holds more than 30 invention patents and software copyrights. He has won four First Prizes and three Second Prizes for Scientific and Technological Progress from the Ministry of Education, along with various awards from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Ministry of Natural Resources, Jiangsu Province, and China’s water science and geological societies.

He has served as Vice Chair of the International Committee on Groundwater (ICGW), Chair of the China National Committee for the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (CNC-IAHS) Subcommittee on Groundwater, Deputy Director of the Groundwater Science and Engineering Professional Committee of the Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society, and in various other leadership roles. Wu is also a member of several prestigious boards, including the editorial boards of Water Science and Engineering and the Journal of Groundwater Science and Engineering. Furthermore, he has served as an expert reviewer for three terms for the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and as a member of strategic expert groups for the Ministry of Science and Technology’s R&D programs on soil and groundwater pollution control under the 13th and 14th Five-Year Plans.
