In-situ remediation of contaminated land with soil mix technology can deliver a multi-technique remedial strategy on the same site combining smart low permeability barriers, permeable reactive barriers, stabilisation/solidification and soil amendment treatments as well as ground improvement, delivering significant advantages over alternative strategies. This was the core objective of Project SMiRT (Soil Mix Remediation Technology) which involved the execution of the largest research field trials in the UK to provide field validation for this technique. The project also involved equipment development, binder development, extensive laboratory studies and monitoring and assessment of the field performance. Around 800m3 of soil were treated on a contaminated site in Yorkshire in May 2011 with 6 different treatments testing ~40 binders and binder compositions and 10 different installation methodologies. Field monitoring, testing and coring activities at the site took place twice: once 2 months after treatment and again in March 2014, with over 300m of cores obtained. This talk presents an overview of the project with a focus on the field trials activities and some of the results obtained.
