Personal Profile

Tenure-Track Associate Professor, Recipient of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars (Overseas)

Dr Qi Zhang’s research focuses on the mechanisms and mitigation of surface-soil-related geohazards under extreme climatic conditions. His research interests include the multi-field coupled behaviour of unsaturated soils, multi-scale interactions in atmosphere–plant–soil system, climate-induced deterioration of earthern infrastructure, and intelligent early warning of regional rainfall-induced landslides.

He is the principal investigator of a National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars (Overseas) project. He has also contributed to major research projects supported by the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong SAR, including the Areas of Excellence scheme and the Collaborative Research Fund. In addition, he has been involved in an industry-university collaborative project at the University of Sydney, Australia. He has published over 30 SCI-indexed papers in leading journals such as Engineering Geology, Géotechnique, Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, Canadian Geotechnical Journal, and Computers and Geotechnics. He serves as an early-career editorial board member for Biogeotechnics, Geoenvironmental Disasters, and Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical TestingHe has received the Donald Stanley Award from the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and the CNKI High-PCSI Paper Award.

Students interested in engineering geology and geohazard mitigation, environmental geotechnics, soil mechanics, and AI applications in geotechnical and geological engineering are warmly encouraged to join the group. Academic and industrial collaborations in related areas are also welcome.
